Gorilla Trekking In Uganda – A Traveller’s Guide

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda is a big thing to Africa Safari travellers and the reasons why are so hard to find – the last of the mountain gorillas are found right there and the trip offers more than just gorillas.

Approximately 1000 mountain gorillas live in the jungle forests that are shared between Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). After decades of decline due to poachers, civil war and diminishing forests, and due to governments’ keen interest, mountain gorilla populations have been picking up in the last couple of years.

In some respects, the growth of gorilla tourism may have helped protect these animals as the government receives funding for conservation and sees the economic benefit of protecting the animals and the forest parks that serve as these creatures’ homes.

Today, more than half of the world’s mountain gorilla population call the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park their home. Of these, 12 gorillas families (each family usually consists of 10-15 members) have been habituated, meaning that although they are still wild they have become accustomed to humans and are unlikely to attack. There are 15 Gorilla Groups available for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda. 13 of those can be visited for one hour – 12 of the habituated gorilla groups call Bwindi  Impenetrable Forest their home and the other one roams around Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. 8 daily visitors are allowed to visit each of the groups and stay with the mountain gorillas for precisely 60 minutes. The Uganda Wildlife Authority organises a one of a kind activity that allows a visitor to spend the whole day with the mountain gorillas which makes gorilla trekking in Uganda a real bucket-list adventure. The mountain gorilla habituation program is done in Mgahinga Gorilla National park where the other two of the mountain gorilla groups are being habituated.

The other Gorilla Habituation Experience takes place in the Southern Area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the Rushaga – Nkuringo sectors. Here only 4-Visitors are allowed with each Group who are with researchers and trekkers.  This being not just a Gorilla Visitation but a Learning Experience.
